The cave itself is the same year-round — dark, cool and unaffected by the weather outside. What makes the season matter is the short open-sea boat between Sabang and the cave beach, which is suspended when the water is rough. So choosing when to visit is really about choosing calm seas, and that means understanding Palawan's two seasons and where the reliable window sits.
Dry season, roughly November to May
Palawan's dry season runs approximately November through May, with the wet south-west monsoon filling in the rest of the year, roughly June to October. In the dry months the sea is generally calmer and the chance of the boat transfer being called off is far lower. If you have flexibility over when to come to Palawan at all, the dry season is the straightforward answer for the Underground River.
March and April are the sweet spot
Within the dry season, March and April tend to offer the calmest seas and the most settled weather — the best odds of a smooth crossing and a cave ride that isn't cancelled. The catch is that these are also popular travel months, which feeds straight back into the permit cap: the best-weather weeks are the weeks the daily 900 slots fill earliest. If you're targeting March or April, book your permit or tour further ahead than you otherwise would.
Visiting in the wet season
It's still perfectly possible to visit in the wetter months — plenty of people do — but you're taking on more weather risk on that open-sea leg. The single best precaution is to build a buffer day into your Palawan itinerary: schedule the Underground River early in your stay so that if the sea is up and the boat doesn't run, you have another day to try again before you fly out. Booking with free cancellation, which most listings offer, makes shuffling the date around painless.
Time of day and the tide
Tours run within the park's daytime hours, and because the river is tidal near its mouth, the boat operation bends around the tide as well as the queue. In practice you don't need to manage this yourself — an early hotel pickup is standard precisely so you reach Sabang, clear the queue and get on the water within the operating window. Booking a tour means the timing is arranged for you; the one thing worth doing is simply starting the day early rather than fighting the afternoon crowd and the afternoon sea.
